Don Cousens Mayor of Markham

Markham Town Centre

After 12 years of public consultation, planning and design, our vision for a unique downtown core is about to become a reality. As the building process begins, I believe that public consultation must continue to guide development.

  • Markham Centre, our new downtown area located south of Highway 7 between Rodick Road and Kennedy Road, is one of the most exciting projects this community has ever seen.
  • The recent Engage Markham survey confirmed that over 80% of our residents value small-town atmosphere, family centred entertainment and quality of life.
  • Markham Centre will set a new standard for Smart Growth. It will enhance our economic vitality, be sustainable for future generations, protect the natural environment and celebrate the community’s values.
    • The new downtown area will be a vibrant, family oriented destination with architectural character and a wide range of housing opportunities.
    • Residents will be able to live, work, shop and play in the same community.
    • Energy-efficient developments will use renewable energy sources.
    • Opportunities to reduce pollution and waste will be advanced. The Markham Centre Plan includes green infrastructure with storm water management, reduction of run-off and use of native landscaping materials.
    • A variety of transportation choices, including rapid transit, scenic walking trails and bicycle paths, will support a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly environment.
    • Public facilities will be designed to sustain arts, culture and local traditions on a year-round basis.
