Economic Prosperity
As Canada’s High-Tech Capital, Markham plays a key role in the
country’s economy. We must continue to attract quality corporations
to our business districts while improving opportunities for our residents
to live and work in the same community.
- I was recently appointed to the
Toronto City Summit Alliance, and will actively participate on two
important committees to represent
Markham’s interests as the Alliance moves forward with its
agenda for the GTA.
- We will be attracting increased investment for research and
development (as was done for the new IBM lab in Markham Centre).
I will be working with the committee to create a federation that
establishes the GTA as one of the premier research and commercialization
regions
in the world.
- We will be working to break down the barriers to help
new immigrants obtain productive employment:
- 44% of GTA residents (and 52%
or Markham residents) were born in other countries.
- Through the
Alliance committee, we plan to establish internships that will
accelerate labour
market integration and recognize employment
qualifications.
