Don Cousens Mayor of Markham

Character Community

As founding Chair of the Character Council, I believe we must make a genuine effort to reinforce traditional values in our society.

  • Early in 2002, Markham proclaimed itself to be a Character Community along with the other eight municipalities in York Region. We are the first Region in Canada to take this initiative.
  • By joining with community leaders in education, faith, law enforcement, business and the media, we will expand our public awareness program to communicate the values of a Character Community:
> Inclusiveness
> Responsibility
> Fairness
> Honesty
> Optimism
> Integrity
> Perseverance
> Compassion
> Initiative
> Courage
> Respect
  • Among the 100 communities in the United States that have previously introduced this program, bullying has been reduced, violence has decreased and citizens are exhibiting a greater sense of character.
  • We must continue to work together to ensure that our families are strong, our neighbours care for each other, our education is effective and our streets are safe.
