- Don was Chair of the York Region Public School Board in 1979.
- As an elected official, he was instrumental in establishing
the following policies and initiatives:
- “Community Use of Schools” policy to provide
the public with free and open access to school buildings
- Compulsory French language education from Grade 1 through
Grade 8
- First Aid Training Program for all elementary and secondary
schools
- East Gwillimbury Foundation for Post Secondary Education
to establish a university in York Region
- Public School Board endorsement of “Block Parent” Program
to help children in need
