Mayor of Markham (1994-Present)
During his past three terms of office, Don Cousens has become
one of the most respected Mayors in Ontario …
- Don has been a member of the Association of Municipalities
of Ontario since 1995, and is a member of the Large Urban Mayor’s
Caucus of Ontario and the Toronto City Summit Alliance.
- As a key
member of York Region Council, Don was Chair of Finance (1997-2002)
and is currently Founding Chair of the Region’s Character
Council.
- Special initiatives in the Markham community include:
- Mayor’s
Youth Task Force, launched in 1995 and now involving over 350 young
people
- Quality Services Initiative (Markham became the second community
in Canada to receive the Progressive Excellence Program Level II
Award)
- Character Community.
- Don Cousens is a Trustee for Markham Stouffville Hospital,
and has served as a Director for Markham Hydro Electric Untility since
1994.
- The Don Cousens Charitable Foundation was established to assist
youth and people in need. Don has been the Honorary Chair for the Markham
Prayer Breakfast since 1999, and was a founding Director for CAYRE
(Community Association for Youth and York Region Education).
- Mayor
Cousens worked with the Government of Canada and Province of Ontario
to obtain support for the new IBM Research and Development
software lab. He also played a key role in encouraging Lucent Technology
and Motorola to locate their corporate headquarters in Markham.
- The
Town of Markham is debt free. Don would like to thank Council and
staff for delivering high quality services to the people of Markham
in a fiscally responsible manner.
