Accomplishments

OUTSTANDING PUBLIC FACILITIES

  • As Trustee for Markham Stouffville Hospital, I worked with the Province of Ontario to promote the $160 million expansion plan.
  • A 5,000 square foot, fully-accessible Thornhill Seniors’ Centre is now being built in the Thornhill Community Centre.
  • The new $42 million, 172,000 square foot Angus Glen Community Centre and Library opens this fall.
  • A 10,500 square foot addition at the Markham Village Library Complex is underway.
  • Eight new parks were completed this year, and 13 more are under construction.

EXCELLENCE IN PLANNING

  • Engage 21st Century Markham involved the community in developing our vision for the next 20 years: continued excellence; integrated yet diverse communities; equal opportunities for all; harmony in diversity; preservation of our built and natural environments.
  • We are demonstrating planning leadership in new communities such as Legacy and Cornell.
  • In 2003, Markham was recognized by UTNE magazine as “one of the 10 Most Enlightened Suburban Areas in North America”—the only Canadian community to receive this honour.

CHARACTER COMMUNITY

  • The Town has declared itself a Character Community and is working closely with York Region on this initiative.
  • The major benefits of the Character Community are to restore a sense of values within society and to reinforce the importance of people living with character.
  • As founding Chair of the Character Community initiative in York Region, I look forward to working with leaders in education, business, faith, law enforcement, sports and culture and other elected officials to promote and celebrate the importance of good character.

NEW TRANSPORTATION INITIATIVES

  • New Rapid Transit services are scheduled to begin in 2005.
  • Road widenings and extensions are now underway to improve traffic flows along major routes.
  • The Town partnered with GO Transit to increase services with the completion of the Centennial and Mount Joy GO Stations in 2002.
